The scene is modern day New York City, Times Square. To Authouart, New York is to modern history what Rome was to the world in the days of Caesar. Everything can be seen in New York City and everything can be done in New York City.
Two youngsters with their backs to us, Authouart's daughter Marie and her boyfriend, are experiencing New York for the first time.
They are seeing what is there but in their minds they see the history, legends and dreams of New York and Times Square spanning more than half a century.
On the billboard is King Kong and the New York City of the 1930's. At the bottom left we have Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall from the '40s and '50s. The artist, with his wife in the passenger seat, drives A yellow Cadillac from the 1960s. From the 1970s we can see the theater marquees announcing the films Clockwork Orange and Alice's Restaurant, Cat's from the '80s and the Who's rock opera Tommy from the '70s that also enjoyed a run on Broadway in the '90s.
This triptych is classic Authouart, packed with the icons that to so many are America.
