In 1983, while walking on a deserted beach early one morning in the town of La Rochelle, Authouart came upon a carousel. He stopped and began to paint with watercolor on paper. At the time he was 40 years old and the carousel brought back images and thoughts of his childhood - riding wooden horses on carousels in his hometown.
