Do you remember Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday? In this charming film they were riding a scooter through the sunny streets of Rome. It was 1953 and, after seeing the film, every teenager in Europe wanted to have a scooter.
When Authouart created this painting, it was 1982 and the scooters were forgotten. He therefore painted the scooter in a state of neglect and disrepair.
It was now 1995 and the scooters were back. Like most of her friends, Authouart's daughter Marie had a scooter. The license plate, Little Italy, was purchased on her first trip to New York, in 1994.
Seeing this resurgence, Authouart was inspired to make the litho.
