The circus is and always has been very popular with the French. It is also popular in the oeuvre of Authouart. Perhaps the carousel best symbolizes the circus. The carousel is like a giant top, toupie in French, and in many ways life is very much like a toupie. For kids of all ages, a carousel has no beginning and no end but does have certain limitations.
On this toupie, a little boy is ready to soar into the seemingly limitless sky as his mother watches him with love. Throughout his life he will turn and turn, reaching for all kinds of brass rings, some attainable, some not, very often ending up back where he started.
